June 1 2007 St Jean de Losne to Canal de Centre

Kevin went down to the station on Saturday to wave the Australian flag for Margaret who arrived in St Jean de Losne at 8pm after leaving England on the Eurostar in the morning then Paris to Dijon and a local train to St Jean de Losne.

Sunday we spent showing her around town then went out to Annie and Paul's barge for Kevin to initiate Paul into the Aussie BBQ tradition. Men cooking and drinking after women prepare it all.

Margaret spent her time being lulled into a false sense of boating life before we introduced her to locking.

We went down the Saone to Chalon sur Saone for the night then started our adventure into the Canal de Centre. The locks on this canal are probably the worst we have struck because of the controls to operate them being in the wrong position and the water coming in so fast right under the boat. The deep 5 to 7 metre ones were very difficult to tie up in and reach the puller to start the operation so Margaret was left on the boat to do the tieing up while I was above to pull the rope to start filling. It was a pretty rough initiation for her.

As we were going along we saw a lovely Chateau in the distance and on reading the canal chart found out that a few locks away was a road to Rully so we decided to visit the village.

We managed the 3k walk to visit the medieval fortress of the Chateau de Rully owned by the Montessus family for the last 400 years. (Property here doesn't change hands as fast as it does in Jutland Parade) After the long walk we decide to reward ourselves with a visit to a Vinyard cellar (Cave in France)for tasting. The guide books says that any list of fine wines must include the name of Rully. After tasting 4 whites, two were Premier Cru's, two reds and a lovely Champagne and having great fun doing it all in French we decided it was time to head back to the boat. We negotiated with the owner Jean-Baptiste Pensot to buy 8 bottles of wine and some Champagne and he offered to close the Cave and take us back to the boat which we really appreciated as we wouldn't have made it back anyway. Our cellar under the double bed now boasts several fine french wines of Rully.
